A good question Andrea! My suggestion would be to get involved with the Yelp community not just as a business owner but as a reviewer as well. This will allow you to make local friends on Yelp who will eventually be willing to review your business.

Being a part of the Yelp community is actually really fun! Create a profile and be sure to put something about being a business owner in your profile & tagline. Then get to reviewing businesses around the area. Read other peoples reviews and compliment them and ask questions. With that many locals in one place some of them will recognize your business, and a Yelper never passes up the chance to write a review!

I hope that helps: your question makes a good topic all on it's own! You might see a follow up post some time in the not so distant future, so thanks for the idea and commenting. Good luck!

Hello!

Thanks for the insightful details about yelp. I've been really interested in it for a long time to review our family business. The problem is we aren't a restaurant, we are a printshop. We have one review already which is really nice! It does push our name up but at one point we had about 5 reviews but yelp takes off anyone who only reviews one or two businesses over a span of time. Basically, you have to rely on those existing yelp users, and how do we find these people?
